I first became the owner of a Mastiff in 1977, and I guess you could say I was hooked because things grew from there. My first Mastiff was an apricot female. I purchased her when she was 5 months old. I fell in love with her because she looked and acted like "Pluto" from the cartoons! Fortunately for me, she had some very old Foundation lines. Her ancestry had Peachtree, Havengore, and Withybush to name a few. Many of the dogs in her pedigree are pictured in the Mastiff book written by Marie Moore.
I decided when she was 2 that I wanted to breed her. The first attempt at breeding her to someone else's male failed, so I decided to buy my own male. Alex & Donna Tinsley were well known breeders at that time, so I contacted them and purchased an 8 month old brindle male by the name of Grenveldt Excalibur.
Excalibur was a nice big boy, so I decided I wanted to show him. He did well and gained his championship easily. And, he had similar lines that combined well with my female. From these 2 dogs, some twenty years later my present day Mastiffs go back to my first pair. I am proud of this because it is like being part of a familiar family.
Over a 10 year period of showing, breeding, and living with Mastiffs I began to realize what and where I wanted to go as a breeder. I also was lucky to meet a few experienced breeders that could help me grow by combining my lines with theirs. Brindles always were my favorite and the darker the better! Old paintings and writings proved to me that at one time there were black Mastiffs and black brindles.
Unlike many breeders, I made brindles a priority and sought to produce the black ones. Through the generosity of Ilse Fass and her male Homewood Oliver, along with my brindle bitch Autumn River's Ebony my goal became a reality.
From that breeding came my black brindle male CH. Lionhearted Prince Lucifer. Prince was as close to black as you can get and still be a brindle. He also carried the double brindle gene which only produces brindle with some as dark as him. He did well at shows with many judges including Eve 0. Fisher remarking that his head type fit the standard perfectly. His disposition was loyal and regal. He lived to 10 years of age and was head of his family till the end. His legacy is in his offspring. I have his daughter that carries his color and also only produces brindles. And I have his two grandsons that will assure his legacy lives on. I feel honored that I was a part of Prince's life. Because he was a black brindle, people all over the world know him or remember him. It made me be different than other breeders, which I'm proud to be able to say.

First and foremost, I want my dogs to be my companions as well as exhibit traits that they were bred for. I like them to be athletic as well as able to survive outdoors. Yet, be versatile enough to do therapy work and obedience work. If a Mastiff is not sound in mind and body, then there will be a lot of problems. It is important to look for those qualities and not just who's winning, or who's the biggest!
I have bred well over 30 champions/titled Mastiffs. A lot of the dogs I have bred are used in therapy work as well as gone on to get their CD's or CDX'S. The Mastiff is easily trained and eager to please you. As long as you treat them with love and give them proper care. Mastiffs are wonderful dogs, but not for everyone. They grow big and are expensive to care for. But once you are owned by one, you become hooked and feel lost if you don't have one in your life!
